Bitch Slap Movie Review by Earl Brown

Bitch Slap Movie Review

Review Movie Trailer

Movie Description

Mix three bad girls, one desert, a ruthless crime lord, 1,473 exotic weapons, $206 million in stolen diamonds and more cleavage than you can shake a stick at, and you'll get Bitch Slap - a rip-roaring, sexy mashup of the audacious sexploitation films of the sixties and seventies. Like Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! injected with a lethal cocktail of estrogen, pheromones and steroids, Bitch Slap hits hard with machine-gun battles, corny jokes, knock-'em-out fisticuffs and even a refreshing slow-motion water fight. When three busty babes arrive at a desert hideaway to steal over $200 million from a ruthless underworld kingpin, things quickly spiral out of control. Hel (Erin Cummings), the caper's mastermind, is a corporate bombshell with a taste for vengeance. Trixie (Julia Voth) is the bait, a gorgeous stripper with a heart of gold and a dress to match, irresistible to men and women alike. Camero (Ameríca Olivo) is the drug-running, man-hating psycho killer who trusts nobody but herself. Allegiances are switched, truths are revealed, criminals are unmasked (and undressed) and nothing is quite what it seems as the fate of the world is precariously balanced among this trio of smouldering, sexy femmes fatales.

Bitch Slap knows never to take itself too seriously. Thanks to its tongue-in-cheek script, the film flips tired sexual stereotypes and clichés. Director Rick Jacobson wrote and produced this latest feature with partner Eric Gruendemann, with whom he first worked on the cult TV sensations Xena: Warrior Princess and Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. The three strong-willed leads are also to be credited for Bitch Slap's wild thrills. They were put through their paces by action director Zoe Bell, Uma Thurman's stunt double for Kill Bill, who starred in Death Proof and can be seen at this year's Festival as a roller-derby hellcat in Drew Barrymore's Whip It.

The cast tossed aside any prim, ladylike mannerisms for a tough rumble in the dirt, and it's clear they're having a grand time whooping it up in this femme-tastic fight fantasy. Bitch Slap is full of clever nods to the down-and-dirty sexploitation classics, but these saucy minxes are no copycats - they're prepared to grab the old genre by the balls, drag it, kick it, crush it and mix it all up.

I saw BitchSlap at the second showing at the Toronto Film Festival. It is extreme at at least in language, anyone with sensitive ears should avoid this one. It is action action action, high volume and beautiful to look at, the girls were nice to.
In Ontario it was rated (14A) Persons younger than 14 years must be accompanied by an adult.

We missed a lot of visual quality watching Renee's Movie (we loved it anyway) at the con because of the media we were watching it on but with that new camera that they were using in her movie and this one the colour and detail was just amazing to see on screen, it was just vivid jump in your face colour and detail.

There was a lot of skin on screen but nothing you wouldn't see at the beach. The violence was graphic at times and there was a lot of chic fights. Zoe had a lot of work in this one, the fighting was very well done.

I also learned a lot of new words for personal body parts that I hadn't heard used in that context and how these body parts could be used sepertatly and together in a pleasing or paid for act. Those descriptions were meant as insults and were hurled around quite a bit, especially in the first half.

Renee and Lucy's parts were small and we've seen about 70% of them already, in bits and pieces, just not in sequence.

I really liked this movie and will buy it when it comes out, hopefully in BluRay.

Hey Bigwig!: Erin Cummings

From Erin's Twitter: Check out my interview from Canada:

Hey, Bigwig! is our daily focus on an up-and-coming actor looking for a big break at this year's Toronto International Film Festival.
Today: Erin Cummings

Q: Why should the movie industry take a chance on you? What do you have to offer?
A: I don't believe that the movie industry should "take a chance" on anybody. That perpetuates the notion that this business is all about luck and I don't believe in luck. I believe that you work smart and you do well at your craft and that gets acknowledged by people wanting to work with you. At least, that's been my path. I've been working steadily for the past five years and will continue to do so because I choose roles that showcase different aspects of my range and ability so that my work speaks for itself. What I believe sets me apart from other actors is that I have an emotional range that I don't see a lot of these days, combined with solid training and a theater background - another thing I don't see a lot of these days. I feel just as confident about my physical comedy as I do my period dramas.

Talking With The Ladies From 'Bitch Slap'

TIFF09 Interview: Talking With The Ladies From 'Bitch Slap'
2009/09/16 | Brian McKechnie,
See Related Video

Bitch Slap was a huge hit when it premiered at TIFF09 during the Midnight Madness programme earlier this week. And the three stars - Julia Voth, America Olivo and Erin Cummings - are quickly becoming cult icons the same way Lori Williams, Haji and Tura Satana became after the 1965 Russ Meyer film Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! (which Bitch Slap has been compared to).

The multi-talented stars (Julia is releasing a book of poetry, America has a song on the charts and Erin will be appearing on Nip/Tuck soon as well as the new Sam Raimi-produced show Spartacus: Blood and Sand next year) chatted with me about the vibe on set, shooting guns and who inspires them.

Huffington Post's Bitch Slap review

From Michael Glitz

MIDNIGHT MADNESS/BITCH SLAP -- After a quick bite, I got in line for the Midnight Madness screening of Bitch Slap, which is the perfect title for a drive-in or midnight movie if I ever heard one and was directed by Rick Jacobson. Organized by Colin Geddes, I'd heard from a number of journalists that he had great taste and the midnight public screenings were a blast. Indeed. I walked in to see a beach ball tossed around the theater, as if we were at a rock concert. When the cast for Bitch Slap came on stage, each and every one of them gamely slinked on as if they were working a runway (or more specifically, the pole at a strip club). I've certainly never been to another film festival where the actors were encouraged to turn around and show their assets to the audience. It was all silly fun, to the point where the hyped up crowd even cheered raucously for the logo of Bombshell Pictures. I had to admit, the animated bit showing a WWII bomber looming into view with a busty pin-up gal and the logo for Bombshell adorning the side was pretty awesome. The movie itself certainly had the right attitude -- it came from some of the creative talent behind Xena: Warrior Princess and Hercules and Kevin Sorbo and Lucy Lawless even popped in for some amusing cameos. If a girl in the desert is digging and digging for treasure, you know it won't be long before she complains about the heat and simply must pour a bucket of water all over herself until she's drenched and her dress clings to every curve. And then do it again. And then giggle as she douses the other girls. It's that type of movie, though I'm afraid there's more attitude than story to sink your teeth into. By the way, I'm sure the trailer is fun but if you can find the title sequence online, check it out. It's a great little short film in itself and a nice history of pin-ups to boot.

Bitch Slap Review - * Pick*

Bitch Slap is a movie about big breasted women kicking butt, blowing stuff up and looking sexy the entire time. Like the films it references (mostly the classic 1965 Russ Meyer cult hit Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!) you'll be asking yourself - is it exploitation or female empowerment? Either way, if you're into it you'll love it and if you're not you'll despise it. I predict this will have a long run of midnight screenings and end up taking on a life of its own. Look for cameos from Kevin Sorbo and Lucy Lawless who both worked with director Rick Jacobson on the television shows Xena: Warrior Princess and Hercules: The Legendary Journeys. Schedule at TIFF.

Twitch TIFF 09: BITCH SLAP Review

by Todd Brown, September 15, 2009 10:50 AM

"Stunt woman extrodinaire Zoe Bell makes a cameo appearance but is far more present as the picture's stunt co-ordinator, giving each of the women a totally believable physical presence.  The women themselves are full of charisma, leaping through costume changes and action pieces with just as much energy as they deliver line after line of wildly over the top dialogue.  The support parts?  Fantastic, with Jacobson pulling in favors from his Xena and Hercules days stashing players from both - including Kevin Sorbo, Lucy Lawless and Renee O'Connor into key support roles.

Subtext? There aint no subtext here.  Bitch Slap is all about the surface appeal, all about delivering a good time to fans who like their entertainment a little on the trashy side.  And that it absolutely does, the film paying off at a level slightly above expectations - expectations that were already fairly high based on the stellar trailers.

Metro.Ca - Bitch Slap a 'loving homage'

From METRO CANADA by CHRIS ALEXANDER September 11, 2009 3:40 a.m.

[...] Madley careening out of the ashes of Meyer's memory is director Rick Jacobson's new hotter-than-Georgia-asphalt chicksploitation epic Bitch Slap -- a wild, untamed action-comedy featuring three no-nonsense, desert-bound beauties (played by America Olivo, Erin Cummings and Julia Voth) who race cars, kick butt and have few issues revealing their, um, assets to whomever cares to look. [...]

When pressed to cite the cinematic action queens that inspired the girls tough but still feminine personas, Cummings opts for the baddest of them all.

"Without question, my favourite is Sigourney Weaver in the Alien films," she says. "I mean, she shaves her head, she picks up the gun, she kills the monsters and she's still hot ... she's the one for me."

Interview with Bitch Slap Director Rick Jacobson

Excerpt: "SR: How do I get my Wife or Girlfriend to see a movie called Bitch Slap!

RJ:       What you tell them is that Bitch Slap, on its exterior, is obviously an exploitation film where there's a lot of visual eye candy for the guys. You can see that in the trailer and we certainly went out of the way to embrace that side of the film. But at its heart this is a girl power film. This is a film driven by smart, intelligent, powerful women who drive the story and kick ass. They're the ones who get in the fights, they're the ones who get bloody, and they're the ones who are manipulating men." [...] Bitch Slap screens Monday September 14 11:59 pm at the Ryerson and Wednesday September 16 3:15 pm at the Scotiabank Theater 3.
