The County Coroner, Detroit 187 style

Check out actress Erin Cummings who plays Dr. Abbey Ward on Detroit 187. She's a new take on an age old profession.

To dig deep into her role, Erin paid a visit to the real Wayne County Coroner to witness autopsies up close, she was shocked to find it wasn't a drab and dreary place.

"This place is really beautiful sunlight, sunroofs, it's all white, there are posters on the wall of Ray Charles and 50 Cent and different sports figures," says Cummings.

Her character comes from money, so she wears modern glasses, expensive designer clothes and even purple nail polish. But this sexy red head isn't just making a colorful splash on the small screen; she's in the community throwing out the first pitch at Comerica Park, to taking part in a kidney foundation fundraiser to even signing autographs at the Dream Cruise.

"If I'm going to be here, for hopefully the next several years of my life, I want to be a part of the change," says Cummings.

Many fans know Erin from Spartacus: Blood and Sand, Mad Men and Dollhouse, and Erin admits she heard the Detroit naysayers.

"Everyone who was not from Detroit said very negative things and tried to instill a sense of fear, and I try not to live my life that way, everyone who was from Detroit and spent time in Detroit said you'll be fine," said Erin.

But Erin says it's about more than staying safe and proving the Motor City bashers wrong, it's about making a long term difference that can be seen and felt when the bright lights of Hollywood go dim.

"When the movies leave Detroit, Detroit 187 will still be here giving people jobs and helping the economy of Michigan."

Betrayed by the Romans. Forced into slavery. Reborn as a Gladiator. The classic tale of the Republic’s most infamous rebel comes alive in the graphic and visceral new series, Spartacus: Blood and Sand. Torn from his homeland and the woman he loves, Spartacus is condemned to the brutal world of the arena where blood and death are primetime entertainment. But not all battles are fought upon the sands. Treachery, corruption, and the allure of sensual pleasures will constantly test Spartacus. To survive, he must become more than a man. More than a gladiator. He must become a legend.

Spartacus Blood and Sand The Aussie PG Version Review

Okay the premiere of Spartacus Blood and Sand was on GO! last night. For Aussie fans who were expecting the same as the US fans, well you didn't get it. Andy did say a few months ago that Australia was getting the PG version and that is what we got.

What we got was the majorly edited version. Since it was eight months ago that I saw episode 1, I went back and compared it. The most obvious editing has been the nudity.

2009 Comic Con Photo of Lucy, Peter and Erin

ImageThe San Diego County news has a gorgeous picture of Lucy Lawless, Peter Mensah and Erin Cummings from the 2009 Comic Con. I suspect this went under the radar with the Spartacus PR juggernaut as it was released on 4 January 2010.

The article is about Starz's decision to renew Spartacus before Season 1 even started.

Rob Tapert said:

“Steven S. DeKnight and his team of writers have created a rich narrative that lays the groundwork for more great stories,” added Executive Producer Rob Tapert. “The slave rebellion led by Spartacus and the oh-so-current political intrigue and personal dynamics laid out in the first season provide rich source material for the second season and beyond.”

Erin in "The Anniversary"

Erin's thoughts on "The Anniversary":
"Working on The Anniversary was almost like just hanging out with friends and there happened to be a camera in the room. With John Campea behind the camera, Robert Sanchez (producer) running around, Ryan Rotten volunteering as a background actor and Julia Voth, it was a fantastic group of people that I was already so close to from the Comic-Con world. I do hope that John's directorial debut brings him loads of other opportunities. He's just wonderful to work with."

Erin on Supporting Detroit 1-8-7

Erin Cummings, cast member/series regular-
"Friends, I encourage you to give "Detroit 1-8-7" a chance. In a world where Law & Order provided "about six months of steady employment for more than 8,000 New Yorkers," "Detroit 1-8-7" could be a huge boost to the economic setting, as well as the national reputation, of Detroit. If we don't encourage them to use this vehicle for good, it will disappear quite quickly like so many other beacons of potential hope that have flared up for us over the years."

Erin Cummings gets Mad Men's attention between Spartacus and new ABC cop series

"I kept telling my agent, 'You have got to get me in,' " she said. For her audition, Cummings "went in there with full hair and makeup and a full 1960s outfit that I had. We played around with it a few times. They put me on hold and then I got the call to come in for the 'table read.' It was something that I've been wanting for a long time, and it lived up to everything I thought it would be. It's a blessing that I hope every actress gets to experience."

Detroit's Prime-Time Show - Detroit 1-8-7

The stars and production team of "Detroit 1-8-7" are all over Detroit as they shoot toward its fall TV debut.

From story plotting to integrating local landscapes and faces, executive producer David Zabel ("ER") said much progress has been made since the June 17 announcement that ABC had allocated a budget that will inject more than $25 million into the local economy for the first prime-time drama set and fully produced in metro Detroit.

"So far everything is really going well," Zabel said. Production on the first two episodes began July 20. ABC has ordered a 12-episode season for the drama about a homicide unit in Detroit and targeted Sept. 21 for its premiere. It will run Tuesdays at 10 p.m., the time slot "NYPD Blue" owned for years.

"This is not a short-term game," Zabel added. "We hope to be on the air for years and years."

Zabel's cast, including Michael Imperioli ("The Sopranos"), James McDaniel ("NYPD Blue") and Aisha Hinds ("True Blood"), are getting acclimated to Detroit after reporting for duty July 13. Zabel said locations such as the Detroit Princess River Boat, Corktown, Greektown and Chene Park are adding to the series' authenticity.

"We're interacting with real people from Detroit and it's giving the actors a real understanding of what the material is," he says.

The Free Press talked with two of the show's stars, Imperioli and Erin Cummings ("Spartacus: Blood and Sand"), for a briefing on how "1-8-7" is coming along -- and how they're liking their new Detroit digs.

Detroit Free Press Interviews Erin 01 August 2010

ImageErin Cummings: 'This is where I am, this is my life.'

Erin Cummings celebrated her birthday at Comerica Park on July 20 by throwing out the first pitch at the Detroit Tigers game against her former home team, the Texas Rangers.

The actress, whose most prominent role to date has been in the Starz series "Spartacus: Blood and Sand," says she's ready for her prime-time turn in "Detroit 1-8-7" as Dr. Abbey Ward, a medical examiner by day and roller derby star by night. She might not have learned her way around yet, but says, "Detroit is my home now."
