This week's Detroit 2020 Person of the Week doesn't live in the Detroit area. But she has still managed to bring warmth to the lives, and hands, of hundreds of local children and adults.

This week's Detroit 2020 Person of the Week doesn't live in the Detroit area. But she has still managed to bring warmth to the lives, and hands, of hundreds of local children and adults.

Erin Cummings came to Detroit as part of the cast of Detroit 187. She hoped her move to the motor city would be long-term. So she got involved with our city and our people.

She didn't just seek out the social scene. Erin also wanted to give back. She got the idea for Mittens for Detroit last Halloween when she saw a relative help a trick-or-treater with cold hands.

Erin enlisted businesses to display glove and mitten drop boxes. There are now more than one-hundred collection sites across the region and local companies are having their own internal glove drives.

Last year Mittens for Detroit collected and distributed nearly 10,000 pairs of new gloves or mittens. This year 3,000 have already been handed out and collection efforts continue.

So, Erin Cummings is our Detroit 2020 Person of the Week because even though her show was cancelled, she’s made it clear that Detroit continues to hold a place in her heart.
